Tempera and gold on cotton fabric, original brocade border, protective curtain. "Dpa ldan dmag zor rgyal mo" this epithet is given to the wrathful tutelary goddess of Tibet dPal ldan Lha mo, in one of her most important manifestations, which has found expression above all in the liturgical texts of the reformed dGe lugs pa school, not only in Tibet but also in Mongolia. According to the early Kadam pa tradition, dMag zor ma is said to be the first of the twelve manifestations of Tara. Later she found entry as the protector of the city of Lhasa, as the protector of the DalaI Lamas, and in particular of the fifth Dalai Lama Ngag dbang bLo bzang rGyam tsho (1671-1682) From this time onwards her cult spread wherever the Gelugs pa school could establish itself. Pa ldan Lhamo, together with Mahakala, Vaishravana, Yama, and lCam sring, belongs to the class of patron deities of the teachings who have reached "beyond samsara", i.e. who are finally liberated from suffering rebirth.
